Cities in City Regions

First Bi-Annual EURA Conference 11-14 May 2006 Warsaw, Poland The main focus of the conference papers is the relationship between cities and their surroundings (suburban zone) as well as the internal diversification within city regions. Papers will be presented in parallel series of workshops which will focus on: Planning - These workshops will be devoted to present-day challenges related to spatial planning for city regions. In many cases city regions are formally divided with municipal borders, and the coordination of planning between separate local government units is one of the main challenges. Papers may also address challenges related to the integration of planning in city regions - the practice as well as recommended solutions for the integration of three types of urban planning: spatial (physical), financial/investment and overall development strategies. Economic Development - Papers should concentrate on the issue of economic links between cities and their suburban zones as well as economic competitiveness of European cities. The workshops will also concern economic development strategies, policies and initiatives to alleviate economic disparities and social deprivation in urban regions. Governance in City Regions - This series of workshops will be devoted to current trends of political and social changes in city regions, such as participation and community involvement, patterns of voting behaviour, public-private networks and partnerships, or new modes of regional coordination. Social Variation in City Regions - These workshops will focus on the social ecology of city regions. Papers may address issues related to such phenomena as for example social segregation, racial problems or patterns of migration. Papers may include case studies or comparative analysis covering several cases within one or more countries located across Europe.
