Approaching the City

Two-day Conference and Open Forum Discussion organised by the RGS-IBG Urban Geography Research Group 1st and 2nd November 2007 Sheffield, England In recent years urban geography has come to be characterised by an increasingly wide range of different takes on the city. Where previously it may have been possible to characterise urban geography as dominated by a handful of competing approaches, to do so in the current period is much more difficult. Thus scholars can be found working from a wide range of perspectives including, but not limited to: feminism, post-colonialism, postmodernism, post-structuralism, psychoanalysis, actor-network theory, mobility studies, queer theory, non-representational theory, and political-economy to name but a few. Though this proliferation has radically expanded understandings of the urban world, there have been few attempts to explicitly reflect on what different approaches add to our understandings of cities or the extent to which they may complement or contradict each other. The 2007 UGRG conference will explore how contemporary urban researchers are approaching the city. The event provides an opportunity for scholars at all stages of the career path to think through in an informal and supportive atmosphere how they and others approach the city. Deadline for abstracts is Friday, 14 September 2007 For more information about presenting a short paper or poster, download the Call for Papers/Posters (pdf).
