Cerdà Year: Past and Future of the Barcelona Area

[i]Barcelona Metropolis[/i] In his introductory text to the feature section of Barcelona Metropolis dedicated to urban planner Ildefons Cerdà, creator of Barcelona's Eixample (or "Expansion"), Francesc Muñoz speaks of "Cerda's gesture". Cerdà imagines a territory that goes beyond the real limits of the city in the middle of the 19th century. In the same way, Muñoz suggests that the need to organize the territory of the vast metropolitan area of Barcelona requires an urban and urbanizing vision on the same qualitative level as Cerdà's from 150 years ago.
