Festival of Architecture 2009-2010

COMMUNITY - ARCHITECTURE Phenomena and forms of urban aggregation among new themes and behaviour in dwelling Modena 23-24 November 2009, Reggio Emilia 25-26 November 2009, Parma 27-28 November 2009 Within the sphere of events planned for the 2009-2010 biennial, the Festival of Architecture will be organising an open selection in order to obtain diversified critical contributions on the general theme of Community-Architecture. Through the call for papers formula, a series of case studies will be selected. The contributions selected will initially be presented, under the Organisation’s supervision, during the week of the first phase of the Festival of Architecture (Modena 23-24, Reggio Emilia 25-26, Parma 27-28 November 2009). In the second phase of the Festival (October- November 2010) a more thorough and exhaustive reinstatement of these contributions will be developed through exhibitions and seminars, including a printed publication of international significance produced by the Festival’s own publishing house. The call for papers is divided into three different thematic focal points: A) City and neighbourhood which makes explicit the aspects of internal relationships within a part of the city and between the latter and the city itself. Starting from the presupposition that the city must return to fashioning itself through its parts and not simply through buildings being added, with a recovery of the European and especially Italian tendency towards the project of a “neighbourhood” understood as a functional part which is not necessarily homogeneous formally or socially, nor functionally furnished with services and public structures to make it in some measure autonomous. Thus this category comprises the relationships that can be established between neighbourhood architecture and city architecture; B) The typological device and the forms of aggregation which makes explicit the mechanisms of typological elaboration: distributive flexibility, standardisation of the various types of ‘residentialism’. The typological re-elaboration of the building, which constitutes an important part of architectonic design, should derive from current forms of behaviour and the resultant uses that contemporary living spaces are put to, thus leading to the identification of new and diversified communal spaces to be collectively enjoyed; C) Architectonic composition and new technology: eco-virtuous architecture which makes explicit, from a compositional standpoint, the technological aspects linked to modern demands for sustainability understood not as a simple juxtaposition of elements but as a figurative potentiality. The aspects and kinds of technology imposed by the new ethic of sustainability must play a part in the project, informing the composition of that figurative component which they must carry. Project models, produced in didactic and research laboratories but also brought to fruition, will be selected on a describable methodological basis. Scholars interested in participating in the selection are invited to send, by the 30 September 2009, an abstract consisting of a text of 3,000 characters max. and max. 10 images regarding one or more design hypotheses, high resolution (300dpi base, 20 true cm) in addition to a presentation note on the author/s and/or research group/s of 1,000 characters. This material should be sent in MSWord or PDF format as far as the text is concerned, and in JPG format as regards the images, to the address: callforpapers@festivalarchitecture.it Material may be sent in Italian, English, French or Spanish. Scholars may propose that their case-studies be assigned to one or more of the abovementioned thematic focal-points, according to the criterion of pertinence. During their evaluation, the scientific committee may alter the suggested assignment. Abstracts received will be evaluated by the Scientific Committee specially set up by the Festival of Architecture consisting of: Carlo Quintelli, Faculty of Architecture, Parma, director of the Festival of Architecture Pierluigi Grandinetti, University Institute of Architecture, Venice, Architectonic Composition research doctorates Federico Bucci, Faculty of Civil Architecture, Milan Polytechnic Raffaele Panella, First Faculty of Architecture “Ludovico Quaroni”, Rome, “La Sapienza” Giovanni Pieretti, Faculty of Political Sciences, Bologna, Italian Association of Sociology – Territorial Sociology Section The scientific committee will select the proposals by the 15 November 2009 and will communicate their decision promptly to the authors.
