[i]The 2010 ISOCARP Awards for Excellence[/i] 46th ISOCARP World Congress 19 to 23 September 2010 Nairobi, Kenya [b]The deadline for submissions (and payment of participation fees) is 1st May 2010[/b] The ISOCARP Awards for Excellence are conferred in recognition of exceptionally innovative urban and regional initiatives that best express the theme of the 46th ISOCARP World Congress on “Sustainable Cites/ Developing World” in Nairobi, Kenya. These Awards were created in 2005 as the highest honour that the International Society of City and Regional Planners can award to a city, region or an institution. The International Society of City and Regional Planners has the pleasure to invite you to submit entries for the 2010 ISOCARP Awards for Excellence. Aims of launching this competition ISOCARP intends to stimulate and promote innovative spatial projects (urban and/ or regional), successfully elaborated and/ or implemented by local, regional, national authorities or other institutions and thus improving the natural and built environment, the quality of life and cultural development. This year special emphasis will be given to projects recognising the importance and significance of spatial projects in the era of sustainable cities all over the world. Eligibility and content The competition is open to all legal entities of various types, from both public and private sectors, such as: local and regional authorities, national, transnational and international institutions, universities, research centres, planning agencies, NGOs, private companies etc. from all continents. Individuals could be eligible candidates in cooperation with/ or through the above legal entities. The themes/ topics of submitted projects/ plans/ schemes could refer to any thematic field or general topic of city and regional planning in the framework of sustainable spatial development strategy. Entry requirements A general description (explanatory report) of the entry is needed, illustrated by sketches, photos and schemes. This report should include contact names from the responsible entity/ authority, the planners involved and other useful contacts. To entry for an award please use the following structure: - Summary (max. 2,000 characters including spaces) - Description of the project (3 to 5 pages) - Describing the innovation in the project (1 page) - Presenting the project in maps, figures, sketches (3 to 5 pages). Each entry should be written in English und must be in electronic format preferably Microsoft Word document (letters: Arial 12pt). All Images and graphics must be free of copyright. Jury and evaluation criteria ISOCARP will deliver Awards for Excellence to the winners. These certificates given to the winners (responsible entities/ bodies) will also mention the urban and regional planners involved in the submitted entries. The projects awarded will be those which are considered of outstanding importance by an independent jury composed of qualified planners (practitioners and academics). The jury may establish categories of awards for projects in the following areas: Academia, Policy/ Governance, Planning Praxis and Developer/ Industry. The jury of the 2010 ISOCARP Awards for Excellence will consist of: - Dirk Engelke ISOCARP Vice President Communication, pakora.net, Germany - Ismael Fernandez Mejía, ISOCARP President, Mexico - Thomas Kiwitt, Technical Director Greater Stuttgart Region, Germany - Mairura Omwenga, ISOCARP Liaison Office Nairobi, University of Nairobi, Kenya - David Prosperi, Florida Atlantic University, United States of America - Shi Nan, Secretary General Urban Planning Society of China - Alfonso Vegara, Fundación Metropoli, Spain - Pablo Vaggione, ISOCARP Secretary General, Design Convergence, Spain The projects have to take the following criteria into consideration: quality of diagnosis (good description of existing situation and issues), internal consistency and coherence of the project, originality and innovative character, the possibility of using the project as best practice in other cases, the quality of presentation. The 2010 ISOCARP Awards for Excellence ceremony The winners of the 2010 ISOCARP Award for Excellence will be announced at the 46th annual planning ISOCARP Congress in Nairobi, Kenya. The award ceremony will take place on World Town Planning Day on 8th November 2010. Use of the competition results; benefits/ obligations of the applicants All entries awarded or not will receive a certificate of participation and a free entrance for one representative to the ISOCARP Congress in Nairobi, Kenya on “Sustainable Cites/ Developing World”. The awarded projects will be published in an ISOCARP publication and will have a wide range of publicity and dissemination, besides being on the website. In addition to that the results of the competition will appear in different international professional publications. ISOCARP has the copyright for the publication of the results of the competition (awards/ winners/ participants) as well as the ownership of all entries after the competition. Participation fees Each candidate must accompany their entry (project dossier) by evidence of payment of the participation fees which are 1,500 Euro for all types of applicants (legal entities). Every entity can participate with more than one project. Each application will be considered as a single entry. The evaluation of entries will be done from 1st May to 31st July 2010 and applicants will be informed. The public announcement of the results and winners will take place during the 46th ISOCARP World Congress from 19 to 23 September 2010 in Nairobi, Kenya.
