[u]EXHIBITIONS [/u] [b][i]Sense of the City [/i][/b] Opening 26 October This major exhibition explores overlooked phenomena and modes of perception in the urban environment. From asphalt, the second crust of the earth, to cacophonies of everyday sounds and smells, to subtle signs of urban regeneration, discover a new `sensorial` approach to the city. For more information: 514 939 7026 or http://www.cca.qc.ca/exhibitions [b][i]Super City – Douglas Coupland [/i][/b] From 9 June to 20 November 2005, Octagonal Gallery The installation by Canadian writer and artist Douglas Coupland (Generation X) reflects on the impact of building toys - how they affect our perceptions of the world and what we do as adults. Inspired by the 1960s toy kit Super City, Coupland has devised for the CCA an imaginary "future city" densely layered with elements of his own universe. For more information, 514.939.7026 or http://www.cca.qc.ca/supercity/eng [u]LECTURES [/u] [b][i]Sensing the City [/i][/b] Thursdays, 20, 27 October and 3 November, 7 pm In compliment to the exhibition Sense of the City, this lecture series is presented in collaboration with Concordia University and is curated by David Howes, Director, Concordia Sensoria research team. The series proposes new readings of the city and examines the potential for architecture and design in relation to the senses. The Canadian composer R. Murray Schafer opens the series on Thursday, 20 October at 7 pm with The Sounding City. Cultural historian Constance Classen discusses The Sensuous City: From the Middle Ages to Modernity on 27 October. Mark Sussman, theatre artist and performance scholar, presents Lighting Urban Spectacle: Electric Interventions in Everyday Life on 3 November. The series continues on Thursdays, 17 and 24 November and 8 December at 7 pm. Free admission. For more information: 514 939 7026 or http://www.cca.qc.ca/programs [u]FAMILIES AT PLAY [/u] [i][b]Super Cities[/b] [/i] Saturday 29 and Sunday 30 October Inspired by the 1960s toy kit Super City, Douglas Coupland has devised for the CCA an imaginary "future city" densely layered with elements of his own mental universe. The young and young-at-heart are invited to construct Super Cities in this session dedicated to toys from the past and the possibilities they hold for the future. Play sessions for children aged 3 to 10, accompanied by an adult, for 90 minutes. 10:15 am, 1 pm and 2:45 pm. Adults $5, children $3. These tours will be one-hour long and tailored to the interests of participants.
