The principles of the International Making Cities Livable movement, initiated in 1985 to make our cities and communities more livable, have become part of a national US agenda, and are being applied by many cities in Europe and other parts of the world. At these conferences world leaders, city officials, practitioners and scholars in architecture, urban design, planning, social sciences, health policy, law and urban affairs gather to exchange experiences and ideas to improve city livability.

The conference will focus on effective strategies and visionary design solutions to making our cities and suburbs healthy and livable for all – young and old, poor and well-to do, and those with health and mobility issues.
Paper proposals are invited from elected officials, scholars and practitioners concerned with the following issues:
• Reclaiming the public realm
• Active mobility and Complete streets
• Family-friendly Housing
• Building lifetime community districts
• Reshaping suburban sprawl
• A healthy city for children
• Achieving neighborhood health equity
• Preventing and ending homelessness
• Food environments
• Integrating public health and planning
• Generating community participation
• Green cities
• Learning from Portland
Notification will be sent within 4 weeks of submission. Final accepted papers are due March 2014. Papers must be presented in person at the conference and will be published in the digital conference proceedings. Selected papers will also be published in Documentation Sets on focused topics.
51st CALL FOR EXHIBIT
Seccessful designs for making cities healthy for all
Urban designers, landscape architects, architects, planners, developers and cities are invited to submit proposals for an exhibit of Successful Designs for Making Cities Healthy for All. Projects in design or construction phase (eligible for inclusion in the Exhibit) must be real projects commissioned with the intention to build. Completed projects (eligible for inclusion in the Exhibit, AND the Awards Program) must already exist and be in use, having been completed or restored within the last ten years.
Six categories of exhibits are eligible:
1. NEIGHBORHOOD PLAZAS
2. ACTIVE MOBILITY & COMPLETE STREETS
3. FAMILY-FRIENDLY HOUSING
4. HOUSING THE HOMELESS
5. MIXED USE
6. 10-MINUTE NEIGHBORHOODS
All selected projects in all categories will be exhibited at the conference. Awards will be made for outstanding completed projects already in use. Winning projects will be promoted on the IMCL website

November 20, 2013 | Deadline for application form and application fee ($225)
January 20, 2014 | Applicants notified of acceptance
March 1, 2014 | Deadline for registration
April 1, 2014 | Deadline for final version of Electronic Exhibits of completed projects
June 8, 2014 | Exhibitors mount their Exhibit Boards in the Governor Hotel, where conference sessions will take place. Exhibits will be on display until noon, June 12
June 10, 2014 | Announcement of the awards at the Discussion Dinner/Awards Ceremony
