ENGLISH ABSTRACT
If Urban Planning is a knowledge and a practical "overview" that can be broken down into many disciplines, then at its core there lies the knowledge and designing of the physical space of the city and the urban areas. This is the thesis, as already expressed in nuce in brackets (is) in the title, around which the central theme that ties the chapters of this book together unfolds.

The book's authors describe a path following the forms that the city has taken on over time, from Alberti's 'big house' to the present 'urban planet'. They invite you on a journey leading from examining the 'reading' of your city regarding its actual space, through to a knowledge of its forms, its elements and its transformations, and then to a series of modern and contemporary examples of 'urban architecture' in the world. The last two chapters deal with planning and urban design in Italy and present a collection of projects, including some recent and important experiences in urban design in Europe.

The book is not so much for those who are already involved in urban planning, inside and outside the world of academia, but more for those who wish to touch on the subject for the first time for reasons of study or for those who would like to find out more, out of curiosity, about its basic elements.

ITALIAN ABSTRACT
Se l’Urbanistica è una conoscenza e una pratica 'panottica' che si declina in molte discipline, resta che il suo il nucleo fondante è la conoscenza e la progettazione dello spazio fisico della città e del territorio urbano. Questa la tesi - espressa già in nuce nell’accento tra parentesi sulla “e” del titolo - intorno alla quale si snoda il filo ideale che lega i capitoli di questo libro. In esso gli autori propongono un percorso tra le forme che ha assunto la città nel tempo, dalla “grande casa” dell’Alberti all’attuale “pianeta urbano”.

Piroddi e Cappucciti invitano ad un viaggio che porta dalle prove di 'lettura' della vostra città nello spazio reale - attraverso la conoscenza delle sue forme, delle sue componenti e delle sue trasformazioni - ad una serie di esempi moderni e contemporanei di 'architettura urbana' nel mondo. Gli ultimi due capitoli trattano delle vicende della pianificazione e della progettazione urbanistica in Italia e presentano un repertorio di progetti comprendenti anche recenti e importanti esperienze di progettazione urbana in Europa.

Il libro è rivolto non tanto a coloro che frequentano abitualmente l’urbanistica, dentro e al di fuori dell’accademia, quanto a chi vi si accosta per la prima volta per motivi di studio o a coloro che desiderano coglierne, per curiosità culturale, gli aspetti essenziali.

ABOUT THE AUTHORS:
Elio Piroddi, professor of Urban Planning at the University of Rome “La Sapienza”, is a designer of award-winning projects and has been published in national and international journals and magazines. He has also been the scientific head of various research groups and international conferences on issues concerning the city and is the author of numerous essays and books including Le città nella storia d’Italia, L’Aquila, (Laterza 1986), Le regole della ricomposizione urbana (Angeli 2000), Scenari per l’Europa delle città (Angeli 2002), Lo stato della pianificazione urbana in Italia (Mancosu 2009). As well, he founded and managed the Study Center Futuri delle città (The Future of the City).

Antonio Cappuccitti is a researcher in Urban Planning and Design at the University of Rome “La Sapienza”. Specifically, he carries out research in the fields of urban morphology, the legislation and rules for shaping the city and the tools and procedures for an Urbanistica concertata (an orchestrated urban planning). He has participated in drawing up complex town plans and programs and is the author of various articles and books, including Tessuti e centralità nella morfologia urbana di Roma e Strumenti, procedure valutative e itinerari gestionali per l’Urbanistica concertata. With Elio Piroddi he edited the third volume of the Nuovo Manuale di Urbanistica. Lo stato della pianificazione urbana in Italia (Mancosu 2009).
