Dietrich | Untertrifaller

Exhibition ETH Zürich 11 November 2009 - 17 December 2009 ETH Zurich The Austrians Helmut Dietrich and Much Untertrifaller belong to a new and highly successful generation of architects in the state of Vorarlberg. During the last 15 years, they have won several major competitions and have produced a wideranging body of work – from detached houses to residential complexes, from a local museum to a festival theatre, from a business enterprise to a university sports complex and from a café interior to extensive revitalization of older building stock. The best-known projects by Dietrich | Untertrifaller include the Festival Theatre in Bregenz, which prompted the establishment of their joint office in Bregenz in 1994, as well as the new hall for the municipal hall complex in Vienna, which led to the opening of their Vienna branch in 2004. As a whole, their buildings are marked by individual solutions to the different challenges represented by each situation. Common factors include the clarity of their ground plans, aimed at flexible usage, on the one hand, and their commanding way of handling topographic conditions on the other. This skilful way of incorporating nature is also seen in the ETH Sports Centre Science City, opened in 2009, the large architectural body of which is shifted unobtrusively into the hillside. The “Dietrich | Untrifaller” exhibition presents the work of these Vorarlberg architects. Along with documentary materials including models and plans, photos by Bruno Klomfar offer a sensitive view of the buildings and their landscapes.
