10 | Sernini a San Polo</br> A film frame from 'San Polo. Laboratorio o quartiere modello?'

10 | A New Beginning
Starting from a Tribute
to Michele Sernini (1936 - 2007)

Leonardo Ciacci

Archive Movies begins its new season of contributions by publishing a documentary film made by Michele Sernini in 1986 when he was a professor of urban structures analysis of the I.U.A.V - University Institute of Architecture of Venice.

Ruben Baiocco comments the movie for readers of Planum. The Journal of urbanism which will also see it in the original, presenting this experiment as one of the ways in which Sernini was able to anticipate unusual points of view by giving new meanings to words, with his usual simplicity.

"The practice of description, when is filmed, becomes a communication project - writes Baiocco - so, different interpretations of the physical and social space can co-inhabit the film version as if to prove that this is precisely to produce such a result: restoring a sense of reality (...) ".
When I met him again in 1999, Sernini was professor at the Università Mediterranea of Reggio Calabria, where I had gone to give a seminar dedicated to my then main research interest: 'the cinema of the planners'. After that occasion Sernini met Patrizia Gabellini who was at that time conceiving Planum, her new magazine on the web and suggested her to entrust to me the 'Movies' section of the new magazine, as it is called since then.
It is for both these reasons that we are glad to start the new season from the film made by Michele Sernini in 1986 and raise awareness of one of the products of his freedom of thought.

The update no.10 'A new beginning starting from a tribute to Michele Sernini' is divided into the following publications:
A new beginning starting from a tribute to Michele Sernini (1936 - 2007), by L. Ciacci
San Polo. Laboratory or district model? (1986) by R. Baiocco

San Polo. Laboratorio o quartiere modello? (1986) di R. Baiocco
